Reliable Capacity Groups are used to model multi-dimensional ELCC curves to meet LT Run reserve margin targets. Each group is a set of Resource Groups, typically of a single technology type (such as battery, wind, or solar).
Multiple groups are combined with input points on this curve and assigned to a Zone or Pool. Each point represents the total capacity of each technology type and the corresponding total reliable capacity attained for the Zone or Pool with that combination of capacity values.
Each Resource Group assigned to one of these Reliable Capacity Groups does not contribute independently to the target reserve margin. Instead, the whole set of groups contributes one total reliable capacity value. This value is solved in the MIP formulated for the LT iteration and is based on user input points (through the Reliable Capacity Values and Capacity Points).
The complexity of the formulation depends on the number of Reliable Capacity Groups being used and the Max Tranches value for each. The number of input points used does not affect the size of the formulation, but the more points given, the more accurate the linear approximation will be. The total reliable capacity solved for is reported in the ZoneYear and PoolYear outputs under Reliable_Capacity_Group_Contribution.
NOTE: Reliable Capacity Groups should be defined for only a Zone or Pool that does not contain any Zone for which Reliable Capacity Groups have already been defined.
