The Peak Shave Only column is used to apply the monthly hydro only at the highest demand hours and give no hydro capability to the lowest demand hours. The algorithm ensures that the ordering of the hours based on demand levels reduced by hydro energy stays the same as the original demand. For example, if hour 1 has a higher demand value than hour 2, then the values of demand net hydro for hour 1 will be greater than or equal to the value of demand net hydro for hour 2. Valid entries are:
The logic will honor the instantaneous Minimums and Maximums, and use the same demand for shaping as the normal hydro logic. It will not use the following inputs, though:
Also, if the hydro set is in a Composite Reservoir, it will not use this peak shaving logic even if selected.
Hydro Shape Sets
To group hydro sets together in order to combine their hydro energy for peak shaving of demand, use the Hydro Shape Sets column. Put a user-defined group name (other than “System” and “System With Hydro”) to specify hydro sets are in a common group. When two or more hydro sets with peak shaving specified are in the same group, the model will order them by total hydro energy (the set with the most energy for the month going first). It will then perform the peak shave algorithm, one set at a time, but adjust the demand seen by each hydro set to reflect the hydro energy already scheduled by the other hydro sets. Assuming that the user specifies the same demand for each hydro set in the group, the net effect of this will be to combine their hydro energy to reduce the highest demand hours.
NOTE: Inputs can use annual and monthly vectors to change this value across the course of a study. For information on how to specify a time series for a variable, see Entering a Time Series.
