The Spinning Reserve column allows the user to specify resources to provide spinning reserves. Users can set a flag of 0 or blank to turn off, 1 to turn on, or FUEL to reference the Fuel Table.
If the unit is flagged as spinning, it becomes a Must Run unit and the Minimum Capacity segment is dispatched with the remaining capacity contributing to spinning. For example, if a 100 MW resource with a 30 MW minimum capacity is flagged as spinning, it runs at 30 MW and provides 70 MW of spinning reserve. This logic overrides any other resource options such as UBB segments, commitment parameters like non-cycling, min up/down, etc.
NOTE: The Use Operating Reserves logic switch must be selected in order for input spin resources to be used.
The optional Spinning Reserve Price input column contains the value that will be used to calculate and report Spinning Reserve Revenue for each flagged spinning reserve resource.
To fill the Operating Reserve Requirement, Aurora searches for units available by first going through the list of resources defined as spinning units. Once it has exhausted this list, it will then look for any hydro resources eligible to contribute to operating reserves (see Hydro Vectors table Reserve Credit Row). Hydro units which are not generating at their maximum capability are, by definition, spinning units in that they are always online and available for immediate release of available generation. As such, all eligible hydro units which are not generating at their maximum capability are available to contribute to meet the operating reserve requirement. After considering all eligible hydro resources, if the reserve requirement still has not been met, the model then will select the most expensive units from the resource stack to meet the remaining requirement and reduce their capability by the amount needed for reserves. For most resources this will usually be their entire capability.
There are two columns in Resource Output table that report spinning. The Spin_Reserve column includes the hydro necessary to meet the reserve requirement as well as units defined as spinning in the Resources input table. Any hydro spinning beyond the required amount is not accounted for in this column because it was not required and therefore will not produce revenue since it is not assigned as reserves. The Input_Spin_Reserve column reports only the spinning that was specifically defined as such in the Resources input table. Note that this amount may exceed the reserve requirement as it is a direct definition, through input, rather than what Aurora decides to set aside as generation for spinning.
NOTE: If the FUEL reference is specified for this variable the value in the Fuel Table will be applied.
NOTE: Specify inputs for any time period (annually, monthly, weekly, hourly, or sub-hourly). For information on specifying a variable's time series, see Entering a Time Series.
