Long-Term

This window contains the settings and parameters used for a long-term optimization study. To perform a long-term study, select the Long-Term Capacity Expansion Study Type option and set other parameters as specified below.

Note that the reported percent complete (in the Status Bar) for long-term studies represents the longest it could take based on the Maximum number of iterations. Since long-term studies rely on heuristic convergences the model cannot know exactly when it will converge, and the run will be complete.

NOTE: Energy Exemplar recommends disabling the Windows automatic updating feature prior to starting a long-term run. Occasionally the updates may start during a long, overnight run and automatically restart the computer, thus ending the study before it finishes.

NOTE: For long-term optimization runs add five years to your desired study period to allow time for the price effects of resources added in the latter years to stabilize and to reduce end effects.

NOTE: Emissions will be included in a long-term study ONLY if the appropriate emissions table are selected in the Input Tables Window (i.e., Emission Price and Emission Rate). If these tables are not selected, a warning in the Status window will be generated at the beginning of a run.

Refer to Long-Term Optimization Logic: Traditional or Mixed-Integer Program Logic for LT articles for more information on Long-Term Studies.

The Study Period settings may be overwritten for the final run of the study by using the Post LT (Date Mode) columns in the General Information table. This is particularly useful when limited sampling is used in the LT project solve (to conserve runtime), but the final run that uses the results of the LT requires more detail or a shorter time frame.
